What is AISC Certification?

AISC Certification is a program run by the American Institute of Steel Construction that verifies a company has the quality-management capability to consistently fabricate, erect or manufacture steel to the standard the industry expects. It is built on AISC 207, the certification standard that sets out the requirements a participant must meet, and it is confirmed through an independent audit of your management system and your day-to-day practices — not a one-time inspection of a single project.

It helps to be clear about what the program certifies. It does not certify an individual weld, a single building, or a batch of material. It certifies your company's ability to control quality — that you have the personnel, procedures, equipment and documented system to produce conforming work every time, across every job. In that sense it sits closer to a quality-system certification than to a product test. An auditor is asking a simple question: can this organization repeatably do what it says it does?

The program covers several categories, so a company is certified for what it actually does — for example building fabrication, bridge fabrication, steel erection, or the manufacture of metal components — often with endorsements that reflect specialized work such as certain coatings or higher-demand structures. Who needs AISC Certification?

  • Document and record control, internal audits, and management review to keep the system honest and improving.
