Global Organic Textile Standard

GOTS stands for the Global Organic Textile Standard, the leading worldwide standard for textiles made from organic fibres. It covers the whole processing and supply chain, from the point fibre is harvested through spinning, knitting, weaving, dyeing, finishing, manufacture, packaging, labelling, trading and distribution. What sets GOTS apart from many labels is that it combines strict environmental criteria with mandatory social criteria, so a GOTS-certified product carries a credible claim about both how it was made and how the people making it were treated.

GOTS is a chain-of-custody and supply-chain certification. Certified organic fibre has to be grown and certified under a recognized organic farm standard first; GOTS then takes over from post-harvest onward, verifying that the organic content is preserved and properly tracked through every processing step and every company that handles it. To carry a GOTS label, a finished product must contain a high proportion of certified organic fibre and every processor and trader in its chain must be certified.

Like the other schemes in this family, GOTS is market-driven. Almost no one is legally required to hold it. Brands, retailers and increasingly demanding end customers ask for it because it is the recognized way to back up an organic-textile claim, and because without it those claims cannot be trusted or, in many cases, even made.

GOTS fits any business along the organic-textile chain that wants the organic claim to survive to the finished product. If a brand or buyer has asked you to supply GOTS-certified goods, you need it. Typical candidates include:

• Spinners, knitters and weavers processing organic fibre into yarn and fabric
• Dyers, printers and finishers and other wet-processing operations
• Garment, home-textile and made-up manufacturers and cut-make-trim units
• Fibre processors, ginners and preparers handling certified organic fibre after harvest
• Traders, agents, wholesalers and distributors who buy and resell certified goods
• Brand owners and retailers who want to label and sell products as GOTS-certified

The principle is the same as any chain-of-custody scheme: every company that takes ownership of the material and wants to keep the GOTS claim attached has to be certified. A single uncertified link breaks the chain for everyone downstream, which is why brands push the requirement all the way back through their suppliers. Sorting out exactly which of your sites and processes fall in scope is one of the first things we settle with you.

A GOTS system pairs verified organic content with real environmental and social controls, all backed by records that let an auditor trace material and quantities. You will need to show that you have:

• Verified organic input, using fibre certified organic under a recognized farm standard and confirming that certification before you rely on it
• Chain-of-custody controls and record-keeping, keeping certified material identified and separated, and reconciling inputs, outputs and stock so the volumes add up
• Restricted-substance compliance, meeting GOTS rules on which chemical inputs, dyes and auxiliaries are permitted and which are prohibited
• Environmental management, including wastewater treatment where relevant and controls on the resources your processing consumes
• Social criteria, based on the core international labour conventions, covering safe working conditions, fair terms, no child or forced labour and freedom from discrimination
• Correct labelling and claims, applying the right label grade and using the GOTS mark only as permitted

Certification is carried out by an approved, independent certification body through document review and on-site inspection. Certified operators hold a scope certificate confirming what they are approved to do, and shipments of certified goods are backed by transaction certificates that let buyers verify each consignment. Certification is maintained through annual audits.

The plainest reason is market access. A growing number of brands and retailers will only source organic textiles from GOTS-certified suppliers, and many make it a firm purchasing condition. Without the certificate you cannot honestly label goods as GOTS organic, and you are shut out of that business. With it, you can hold and win the contracts that increasingly define the organic-textile market.
