AS9100 is being renamed and reissued as IA9100 — a single, globally unified aerospace quality management standard aligned with the upcoming 2026 revision of ISO 9001. For most suppliers this is an evolution rather than a reinvention: your AS9100 Rev D certificate stays valid, and you will move to IA9100 during a defined transition window once the new standard is published. But the changes on the horizon — tighter controls on cybersecurity, counterfeit parts, and the supply chain — reward organizations that start preparing early.
Here is a plain-English guide to what is changing, when, and what aerospace and defense suppliers should do now.
What is IA9100?
IA9100 is the planned successor to AS9100, the quality management standard for the aviation, space and defense industry. The prefix "IA" stands for International Aerospace, and it replaces the regional prefixes the same standard has carried for years — AS in the Americas, EN in Europe, and JIS Q in Japan. Instead of one technical standard wearing three regional badges, the industry moves to a single, globally consistent designation published under the International Aerospace Quality Group (IAQG).
The content still builds on ISO 9001 and adds the aerospace-specific requirements the sector depends on — configuration management, first-article inspection, counterfeit-part control, product safety and traceability. What changes is the name, the global alignment, and a set of modernized requirements described below.
Why is the change happening now?
Two forces are driving it. First, ISO 9001 — the foundation AS9100 is built on — is itself being revised, with ISO 9001:2026 expected to publish in late 2026. Because AS9100/IA9100 layers aerospace requirements on top of ISO 9001, it has to be refreshed in step. Second, the IAQG has been working to remove the duplication and confusion created by regional variants, so that a supplier certified in one region is unambiguously recognized everywhere.
The result is a standard that is both globally unified and modernized for the risks aerospace faces today — from digital threats to increasingly complex, multi-tier supply chains.
What is expected to change in IA9100
The IAQG has signaled the direction of the revision, though the exact clause wording will not be final until the standard publishes. Based on IAQG communications and industry analysis, the areas to watch are:
- Cybersecurity and data integrity. New expectations for information security to protect the quality management system and product data against digital threats — a first for the standard.
- Counterfeit parts and supply-chain control. Expanded, stricter requirements for counterfeit-part prevention, traceability and testing, and tighter control over sub-tier suppliers deeper in the chain.
- APQP and PPAP. Closer, more formal linkage to Advanced Product Quality Planning and the Production Part Approval Process for operational planning and product control.
- Product safety and competence. Continued emphasis on product safety, human factors, and demonstrating the competence of the people who affect quality.
- Culture of quality and ethics. A stronger expectation that leadership demonstrates a genuine quality culture and ethical behavior — including factors such as fatigue and human error in root-cause analysis.
- Climate and sustainability. Carried over from ISO 9001, organizations will be expected to consider whether climate change is a relevant issue for their management system.
None of these should alarm a well-run supplier. If anything, they formalize practices that strong aerospace quality teams already treat as table stakes.
The expected timeline
The IAQG is reported to be adopting a two-step release, with the standard rolling out in stages rather than all at once:
- A limited, preliminary release aligned with the 2026 revision of ISO 9001, to get the naming and core alignment in place.
- A full major version, referred to as IA9100A, expected around 2027, carrying the complete set of updated aerospace requirements.
- A transition window following the major release — reported as roughly two to three years — during which organizations move from AS9100 Rev D certification to IA9100.
These dates are provisional. Until the IAQG and ISO publish the final versions, treat the timeline as directional and confirm specifics with your certification body before making firm plans.
What it means for your certification
The most important point for suppliers already certified: your AS9100 Rev D certificate remains valid, and you will not have to act the day IA9100 publishes. Instead, you will transition during your normal surveillance and recertification cycle, inside the transition window the IAQG defines. The practical goal is to time your move so it lands naturally with a scheduled audit rather than forcing an extra one.
What you should not do is wait until the deadline is close. Suppliers who transitioned late during past revisions (AS9100 Rev C to Rev D, for example) often found themselves competing for registrar availability and rushing evidence. Early, calm preparation is always cheaper than a deadline scramble.
What aerospace suppliers should do now
You cannot certify to a standard that has not published yet — but you can get ready so the eventual transition is quick and low-cost:
- Keep your AS9100 Rev D system genuinely strong. A healthy, well-run system transitions easily; a neglected one turns any revision into a crisis.
- Shore up the likely change areas early. Review your information-security posture, your counterfeit-part controls and sub-tier supplier oversight, and your APQP/PPAP discipline — these are the areas most likely to tighten.
- Keep your documentation lean. A bloated, multi-tier manual makes every revision expensive. A single-level system your team actually uses can absorb new requirements with minimal rework.
- Run an early gap assessment. Mapping your current system against the expected IA9100 changes now turns a future transition into a short, planned project instead of an emergency.
These steps help whether you hold AS9100 for manufacturing, AS9110 for maintenance (MRO), or AS9120 for distribution — all three sit under the same IAQG framework and will follow the same path.
