What is AS9100?

AS9100 is the quality management standard for the aviation, space, and defense (AS&D) industry. The current revision is AS9100D. It is published through the SAE and IAQG (International Aerospace Quality Group) family of standards and is used worldwide — you will see the same requirements under the EN 9100 and JISQ 9100 designations in Europe and Asia.

Like the other aerospace standards, AS9100 is built on ISO 9001. It takes the full ISO 9001 management-system framework and adds the requirements that aviation, space, and defense demand — because in this industry a single nonconforming part can put lives and missions at risk. So AS9100D is ISO 9001 plus aerospace-specific requirements around risk, configuration management, product safety, counterfeit-part prevention, and rigorous traceability.

It is worth knowing the family it sits in. AS9100 is for organizations that design and/or manufacture aerospace products. AS9110 is the version for maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) organizations. AS9120 is for stockist distributors — companies that buy, hold, and resell aerospace parts. Same DNA, different scope.

Who needs AS9100?

AS9100 is for organizations that design, develop, or manufacture products for the aviation, space, and defense sectors — anywhere in the supply chain, from primes down to small machine shops.

It is a fit for:

  • Manufacturers of aircraft, spacecraft, or defense parts, assemblies, and systems
  • Companies that design aerospace components or products
  • Suppliers of raw materials, fasteners, castings, forgings, and electronics for aerospace use
  • Providers of special processes — heat treatment, non-destructive testing, plating, welding, coatings
  • Manufacturers looking to enter the aerospace supply chain and qualify with a prime or Tier 1

If you are an MRO shop, the right standard is usually AS9110; if you are a distributor of aerospace parts, it is usually AS9120. As with automotive, certification is typically required by your customer — the primes (think Boeing, Airbus, Lockheed Martin and their major suppliers) flow AS9100 down as a condition of doing business. Certified organizations are also listed in OASIS, the industry's online supplier database, which is where customers go to check your status.

What AS9100 requires

AS9100D keeps every ISO 9001 requirement and adds the aerospace layer on top. The additions reflect what happens when the stakes are safety-critical:

  • Risk management woven through operations — identifying, assessing, and controlling risk in your processes and products, not just planning for it abstractly
  • Configuration management — knowing exactly which design, revision, and build state applies to every product, and keeping it consistent through changes
  • Counterfeit-parts prevention — controls to keep suspect and counterfeit materials out of your supply chain and your product
  • Product safety — explicit attention to the safety of the product throughout its life cycle
  • First Article Inspection (FAI) — a full, documented verification that the first production part meets every requirement
  • Rigorous traceability and record control, often down to the material heat-lot and individual serial number
  • Tight control of special processes and of the suppliers who perform them
  • Foreign object debris (FOD) prevention and control of nonconforming product

The whole standard is oriented toward one idea: on-time delivery of conforming, safe product, with the evidence to prove it.

Why get AS9100 certified

The first reason is access. Aerospace primes and their major suppliers require AS9100 from the organizations they buy from, and they check the OASIS database to confirm it. Without the certificate, you generally cannot bid — with it, you become a qualified, findable supplier in a market that values long, stable relationships.

Beyond market access, the discipline pays off. Configuration management and strong traceability mean you always know what you built and can prove it — invaluable when a customer asks or an issue arises years later. Risk management and FAI catch problems before parts ship. Counterfeit-part and FOD controls protect you from some of the most expensive and reputation-damaging failures in the industry.

Aerospace customers also score their suppliers hard on quality and delivery. A robust AS9100 system directly improves those ratings, and in a sector where programs run for decades, a strong rating is what keeps you on the next contract and the one after that.
