Energy Efficiency in ISO 50001

ISO 50001 is created to promote and facilitate the efficient and responsible use of energy resources.  It is also the ISO standard by which globally-competitive companies need to adhere to in order to improve their overall energy consumption performance. The purpose of this program is to encourage members, involved in the manufacturing industry, to continually maximize their energy reduction opportunities. Successful implementation of this specification leads not only to greatly reduced costs but also diminished greenhouse gas emissions.

If industrial plants are able to meet the requirements included in the framework of this particular ISO standard then they will be recognized. The chance to enhance their reputation as a socially-responsible business entity has more benefits. These benefits of effectively incorporating the ISO system to the operational structure of the company include less reliance on fossil fuels, full utilization of existing energy assets in production and stimulation of innovative behaviors in energy-related sectors.

In ISO 50001, the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) approach helps improve energy management system by ensuring that environmental performance-related objectives are met.

  • Plan – This is facilitated by the top management, particularly an energy team. The team would have to draft the policy in form of writing, clearly stating the intent and direction of the energy policy. The policy must be thoroughly discussed within the organization. Transparency between the management and the employees are encouraged here. The energy team also has the task to identify energy opportunities and prioritize it.
  • Do–The set goals and processes during the planning stage are now introduced and applied.  Resources are explored, responsibilities are designated among the workers and ISO training is initiated.ISO training ensures that all employees are ready to carry out their duties efficiently.
  • Check – This is the phase wherein the system is assessed. Internal audit helps verify if the imposed policy is working well and if it is able to generate the expected outcome.  All procedures are monitored and evaluated according to the established requirements.  The results are then compiled and submitted to the higher ups.
  • Act–The top management prepares the document referred to as the management review. Results are evaluated based on the overall performance level of the organization. If necessary, preventive or corrective actions are implemented.  Decisions concerning optimization of energy-focused processes and strategic plans are made.
