Food Safety System Certification

Food Safety System Certification 22000 (FSSC 22000) is an internationally accepted and ISO-based certification scheme involving the auditing and food safety certification of the supply chain. FSSC 22000 came about through an open and extensive consultation with several groups.  It has been developed and maintained by the Foundation for Food Safety Certification to provide a comprehensive and widely-accepted system that will also serve as a vital link between food industry players and concerned entities such as the market and the government.

Audit

ISO 22000-certified organizations can attain full FSSC 22000 recognition if they are able to meet all the requirements, including the PRP-sector’s technical specifications, imposed by the said certification scheme during surveillance audits.  FSSC 22000 utilizes both ISO 22000:2005 and BSI-PAS 220:2008 as basis for the certification’s criteria set.  It also depends heavily on TS/ISO 22003 for the accreditation conditions.  For certification bodies, however, some additions have been provided.  In addition to that, certification bodies that are affiliated to the Foundation are the only ones licensed or authorized to issue FSSC 22000 certificates.

Scope

FSSC 22000 is used on audits and certification assessments of the following organizations:

  • Manufacturers of Perishable goods including animal products (e.g. poultry, dairy, eggs meat and fish) and vegetal products (e.g. fresh and preserved fruits, fresh and preserved vegetables and juices)
  • Manufacturers of products with long shelf life (e.g. canned goods, snacks, beverages, pasta and food ingredients)
  • Manufacturers of (bio)chemical products (e.g. additives and vitamins) excluding technological and technical aids
  • Food packaging manufacturers that have indirect or direct contact with food
  • Producers of animal feeds

Benefits

Through the acceptance of Global Food Safety Initiative (or GFSI), FSSC 22000 has gained worldwide acknowledgement, thus elevating the scheme’s overall standard of competence. FSSC 22000 has also helped strengthen the relationship between the suppliers and the consumers.  Companies that have acquired FSSC 22000 certification simultaneously gain the trust of their partners and customers as they carry the mark of an organization committed to delivering a quality performance that is able to handle the ever-changing demands of the industry.  It also demonstrates the efforts made by the company to continuously improve their system that is supported by third-party evaluations.
